Historically it is known as a prosperous part of the textile industry, with Flemish weavers establishing a cotton and wool tradition during the 15th century, and the industrial revolution ushering in a boom of textile manufacture in the 19th and early 20th century. Further back in time it also played a significant role in the English Civil War (1642–1651), as a Parliamentarian outpost in the middle of Royalist territory.
